WELCOME TO OUR JULY 2026 NEWSLETTER |
Greetings, What it means to be Human Are we conscious of how we make our decisions? Are we aware of why we might react unconsciously to certain situations, why certain events can trigger reflex responses? Our recent meeting on Zoom featured an interview with Kevin Liston, the author of our discussion paper, What it means to be human, an introduction to understanding how we think based on the work of Bernard Lonergan. Lonergan (1904-84) was a Canadian Jesuit priest, philosopher and theologian regarded by many as one of the most important thinkers of the 20th century. Kevin explained that the structure of consciousness could be described in terms of the key features of four levels. While these four levels of conscious operations are described separately, we seldom follow the pattern in a linear fashion in our daily living. We are much too complicated for that. Our consciousness expands as we move from one level to another. Inexperiencing we are aware of ourselves as sentient beings, vulnerable to events beyond our control. With insight, we discover ideas and concepts about who we are. As we make reasonable judgements, we affirm ourselves as knowers. Finally, with discernment, decisions and commitment, we form and become conscious of ourselves as mature, responsible persons. As we become aware of how we think we can act with intention and avoid unconscious reflexive actions. As we act consciously we develop our own sense of ultimate meaning, i.e. our spirituality.
